Cape Town – Police in Maphumulo are investigating a case of concealment of birth after a newborn baby was found dead on January 4, 2024, in the Masiwela Area.
The baby was discovered inside a plastic bag dumped down a pit latrine, police spokesperson in KZN, Colonel Robert Netshiunda said.
He did not, however, confirm any arrests.
A medical rescue team suggests that a 16-year-old mother might be involved.
A private emergency services company, IPSS Medical Rescue, initially claimed that the 16-year-old and her mother were arrested, but this has not been confirmed by the police, IOL reported.
“The packet containing the newborn’s body was successfully retrieved from the pit latrine.
“Reports from the scene indicate that a 16-year-old female allegedly concealed the birth of a baby and disposed of it in a two-metre-deep abandoned pit latrine in a neighbour’s yard after placing it in a plastic packet.
