Cape Town — In the wake of Mavuso Msimang’s resignation from the African National Congress (ANC), there is speculation about former president Jacob Zuma being the next veteran to depart from the ruling party.
This speculation is fuelled by the belief of some officials from KwaZulu-Natal that Zuma has affiliations with a party named after the ANC’s armed wing, uMkhonto we Sizwe.
The party has already been registered with the Electoral Commission (IEC) and concerns were heightened when a poster of Zuma circulated on social media with no ANC logo, EWN reported.
According to Zuma’s daughter, Dudu Zuma-Sambudla, Zuma is set to spend 16 December, which marks the anniversary of MK’s establishment, in Soweto.
“The Commander In Chief, President Zuma, The People’s President Took An Oath In 1962, At 20 Years Old And Became An Active Member Of uMkhonto WeSizwe… President Zuma Will On Saturday, 16 December, Celebrate 62 Years Of Heroism And Sacrifice And Remember Our Fallen Soldiers!”

The ANC is looking to repeat the ANC’s genesis story where churches and traditional leaders will join hands with politicians with the goal to change the country’s political landscape.
It was hoped that Zuma would play a key role in the party avoiding a disaster at the polls in provinces like KwaZulu-Natal, some linked to this new movement have suggested he needs to help save the ANC from the outside.
According to The Citizen, the ANC said it was expecting all its former leaders to campaign for the party in the upcoming national and provincial elections next year.
“All ANC former presidents who are former leaders are always available to campaign for the ANC. As far [as] we are concerned, they are doing that work,” ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu, said.
The party holds their concerns, after the resignation of Veteran Mavuso Msimang which has led to some ugly back and forths between Msimang, and ANC secretary general, Fikile Mbalula, who have accused each other of lies regarding Msimang’s resignation.
