Cape Town – The Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) is tightening hand baggage regulations across its entire airport network to ensure compliance with aviation safety standards.
The regulations apply to domestic, regional, and international flights departing from South Africa.
Passengers with non-compliant items will be directed to check-in counters to transfer their baggage to checked luggage.
While these regulations are not new, Acsa has emphasised rigorous enforcement, Times Live quoted Acsa group executive for corporate services Laurene Less as saying.
Economy class passengers are allowed one bag and one slimline laptop bag or handbag, while first-class passengers can have two bags and a slimline laptop bag.
The maximum dimensions for bags are 56cm x 36cm x 23cm, with a weight limit of 7kg per bag.
Acsa specifies that the slimline bag is exclusively for a laptop and charger, excluding items like documents and clothes. Hand luggage weight checks will be conducted at security points before passengers reach boarding gates.
“From a passenger safety perspective, the hand baggage regulations aim to identify overweight luggage that could pose risks to both aircraft and passengers,” Aaron Munetsi, CEO of Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA) said, according to IOL.
He added: “We strongly encourage compliance with these regulations, as failure to adhere will necessitate redirecting passengers to check-in counters for luggage check-in.”
