Cape Town — EFF leader, Julius Malema, believes that Mdumiseni Zuma, the instigator of the July 2021 looting, did not have proper legal representation during his trial.
The sentencing at the Pietermaritzburg High Court revealed that Zuma was handed a 12-year prison sentence, with 2 years suspended, for charges of public violence and incitement to commit arson.
Malema responded to the judgement and he believed that Zuma did not have the right legal representation to help with his case and he offered the EFF’s services to help him.
“I don’t think the so-called July 2021 instigator Mdumiseni Zuma had proper legal representation. I’ve since asked our KZN provincial chair to get the facts and how we can be of assistance,” Malema wrote on X.

According to The Citizen, the charges against Zuma are linked to the widespread looting that took place in KZN in July 2021, at the Pietermaritzburg Brookside Shopping Mall. He posted a video of himself during a looting where he encouraged people to come and loot the next business day.
“Can you see how quiet the mall is? They have closed at Brookside. If they dare open, we will arrive at 6 in the morning to check if they have opened. If they are open, we are going to destroy here. We are going to cause destruction here. We do not want any person … working tomorrow,” Zuma said in the video.
It was also reported that one of the alleged instigators, Ngizwe Mchunu was found not guilty. He faced charges related to the public violence that led to the destruction of properties during the July unrest of 2021, as well as contravening the Covid-19 regulations and Disaster Management Act.
