Cape Town – Cyclists in Gauteng are facing a surge in attacks, with four incidents reported in a single day earlier this month, according to the Pedal Power Association.
The attacks, occurring in areas like Pretoria East, Centurion, and Bronkhorstspruit, have resulted in fatalities, and the assailants are reported to be armed and dangerous, Times Live reported.
The CEO of Pedal Power, Neil Robinson, said that the attackers target cyclists riding alone or in smaller groups, particularly during specific time windows.
“On November 2, four attacks were reported, two in Pretoria East and Bronkhorstspruit. The others were in areas between the R21 and the Red Barn [in Irene]. Groups of eight to 12 riders were attacked so riding in numbers is not deterring the perpetrators.
“On November 18 a cyclist was shot and passed away in Pretoria East towards the Bapsfontein/Delmas Road,” the report quoted Pedal Power CEO Neil Robinson as saying.
The trend appears to intensify as the festive season approaches, potentially driven by a market for stolen bikes.
Athletes Safety SA has also voiced concerns over the increasing attacks on cyclists.
The spokesperson, Phillip Ralehlaka, expressed worry about the safety of cyclists, highlighting the upcoming Virgin Active’s 94.7 Ride Joburg road race, one of the largest cycling events in Africa, scheduled for the weekend, IOL reported.
“We would like to remind everyone, cyclists and runners, to stick to the basics as far as their safety is concerned; avoid jogging wearing headphones, wear reflective clothes when jogging or cycling outdoors, and avoid cycling in secluded areas,” the report quoted Ralehlaka as saying.
