Cape Town – The South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) has expressed disappointment over Israel’s decision to recall its ambassador to South Africa, Eliav Belotserkovsky.
The move comes amid strong criticism from the South African government regarding Israel’s ongoing bombardment of Gaza.
The South African Parliament is scheduled to vote on an EFF motion to shut down the Israeli Embassy in South Africa and sever diplomatic relations.
According to EWN, the SAJBD criticised the perceived hostility towards the Israeli ambassador and highlighted a sustained campaign of demonisation by the ANC.
“This takes place against the background of a sustained campaign of demonisation and bullying of the Israeli ambassador by the ANC [African National Congress] and the South African ruling party, and the South African government in a way that was unconducive to dialogue and engagement,” the report quoted the SAJBD’s national chairperson, Karen Milner as saying.
The board expressed hope for a return to dialogue and engagement between the two countries once the consultations are concluded.
South Africa had also recently recalled its own diplomats from Tel Aviv for consultation.
