Cape Town — Police minister, Bheki Cele, has revealed the crime statistics in South Africa for July through to September, confirming 6 945 deaths.
Cele revealed the crime statistics for the second quarter of the year of the financial year and in his report, he conceded that crime statistics were still “stubbornly” high, despite second quarter reductions in murder and rape cases, IOL reported. He said in the second quarter they have made several arrests for crimes related to sexual offences.

Cele was joined by Police commissioner, Gen Fannie Masemola, and Major-General Norman Sekhukhune, the head of the South African Police Service crime research and statistics.
Sekhukhne gave a breakdown of the full list crime statistics, including murder, attempted murder and sexual offences, which included rape, and sexual assault, TimesLIVE reported.
Murder and sexual offences have continued their downward trend, with murder decreasing by 0.8% and sexual offences by 1.5% in the second quarter of the 2023-2024 financial year.
Murder cases stood at 6 945, 59 less cases than the same period last year. There were 42 297 attempted murder cases, an increase of 6 911 cases compared to last year.
There were 13 090 sexual offence cases, down from 13 280, while rape and sexual assault declined by 0.7% and 2.5% respectively. Contact sexual offences saw the biggest decrease, dropping by 35.9%.
The only offence to increase in this category was attempted sexual offence, which went up by 4.1%.
Cele also added that new operational policing strategies and interventions have led to a decline in crime statistics, but more still needs to be done.
