Cape Town — Former South African actor, Vusi Thanda, has outlined his political ambitions as he wants to run for Eastern Cape Premier for his party, the African Movement Congress (AMC).
Thanda is best known for his role on hit South African sitcom, Emzini Wezinsizwa. His political ambitions were confirmed by the party’s secretary general, Thabile Gwadiso, SNL24 reported.
“There were three candidates in the Eastern Cape who were all going for the position of Eastern Cape chairperson. And the members voted for Vusi. We need to challenge the current leadership of the Eastern Cape. Politics in the province is in a bad way. The Eastern Cape has produced two presidents, yet that province has nothing to show for it. It is still one of the poorest provinces.” Gwadiso said.
Gwadiso added that Thanda’s selection had nothing to do with his fame, but that he was chosen on merit, saying all chairpersons automatically become the new premier candidate.

According to Sowetan Live, Thanda said he always wanted to get into politics and he believes he can help to make a difference.
“I’ve been watching from the sidelines and watching leaders who have been there before us who have been doing their jobs but not to the satisfaction of everyone. I realised that they need help and I believe I can help,” he said.
He added that he joined the AMC because he wanted to be part of the party and that he was chosen because the party wanted to work with him, rather than to be an ambassador for the party. He also added the party’s colours were not chosen to confuse voters with the ANC.
“I truly believe that they trust me to do a good job. Politics is a race and the tool is simple: you want to win so you have to run. It is not about what you are wearing but about what the spectators see,” he said.
