Cape Town – Former Joburg Council Speaker and Congress of the People (Cope) member Colleen Makhubele has alleged that she was fired for expressing her ambition to lead and for her involvement in the South African Rainbow Alliance (Sara).
Makhubele spoke out for the first time after being dismissed from her position in the Joburg Council this week.
Sara, chaired by Makhubele, includes small parties like the NFP, AARM, ICM, and churches.
Cope President Mosioua Lekota said that while the party considered joining the alliance, Makhubele was not authorised to sign up the party, EWN reported.
Cope contended that she lied about their affiliation with Sara, leading to her effective expulsion from the party.

Makhubele, however, claimed that she was not consulted about her termination, denied joining another party, and insisted that she was fired rather than leaving voluntarily.
“I was fired because I dared to believe that I can lead, that I can lead Sara and the nation of South Africa. I was fired because I had the courage to voice my ambition and to raise my hand in this dire state of our nation to say I’m available to be a leader. Frankly, they fired me because they could and because they had the power to… The men feel they are entitled to lead,” she said.
