Cape Town – African National Congress (ANC) deputy president Paul Mashatile has acknowledged that the party has exhibited shortcomings during its 29 years in government.
He spoke to party members in Thaba Nchu, Free State, highlighting that the 2019 manifesto review was a valuable platform for self-assessment.
Mashatile said that the ANC’s primary focus would be on improving the economy to provide job opportunities for the approximately 10 million unemployed South Africans.
While he acknowledged the ANC’s successes in delivering housing over the years, he also acknowledged its flaws.
“We are working on ensuring that the economy of the country is stimulated so that the millions of South Africans who are currently unemployed can also have an opportunity to participate in the economy,” SABC News quoted Mashatile as saying.
He also spoke about the importance of unity within the ANC, saying that factionalism could hinder the party’s ability to deliver services to the public.
“The ANC wants to build unity. We need to unite, work together and end factionalism. If we work as factions we will not be able to deliver. We will not be able to bring about a better life in our communities,” said Mashatile.
He also condemned crime, corruption, and gender-based violence (GBV) while highlighting recent legislation aimed at combating GBV.
