Johannesburg — The biggest and best South African tv stars were honoured at the South African Film and TV Awards (SAFTAs) this past weekend.
The event took place at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand and it was the first award ceremony to take place in-person in three years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
There were over 50 categories to be awarded and it was an opportunity to celebrate the best South Africa has to offer in the entertainment industry.
According to The Citizen, National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) Acting CEO, Thobela Mayinje, applauded the hard work and dedication of the Saftas jury and congratulated all the winners.
“You represent the best of the South African film and television industry. We are excited by all the films now showcasing in international festivals and markets.” she said.

The highlights of the night included 7deLaan actor, Koos Roets, and former journalist, Derek Watts, honoured with a ‘lifetime achievement’ award.
Other big winners on the night included Cindy Swanepoel for best TV soap actress, Melusi Mbele for best TV soap actor, Thando Thabethe for best actress in TV comedy. How to Ruin Christmas led the way for TV category awards with five wins, while eTV won the most channel awards with 12.
TVSA posted a full list of the nominees and winners of eachh category at the SAFTAs17.
Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Zizi Kodwa, was also in attendance at the event and praised the winners for the love and inspiration to their craft.
