Cape Town – Police Minister Bheki Cele has denied allegations that the government wasted taxpayers’ money on 100 idle cars, stating that some of these vehicles have now been put to use.
City Press had reported that luxury cars, including sedans and SUVs, had been parked at the crime intelligence headquarters for over a year, depreciating in value due to sun exposure.
However, according to The Citizen, Cele dismissed the report, saying that some of the cars, including those with advanced technology, were being deployed for police efforts against crime.
“That’s not true. Among those cars, there are 20 with very high tech [capabilities] on them, which have been part of the request to utilise from Parliament. That has passed now, and we are beginning to unleash some of these high-tech cars out there,” the report quoted the minister as saying on Tuesday while briefing the media on the recent takedown’s successes of policing counter operations.
He suggested that sources unhappy about not being able to use these cars for personal purposes may have spread the false story.
Cele also mentioned progress in the AKA murder case and urged the public to allow the police the necessary time to conclude their investigations without interference.
