Cape Town – Former president Thabo Mbeki has raised questions about Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party, continuing to sing the controversial “Shoot the boer” song.
Mbeki noted that while the African National Congress (ANC) didn’t have a policy to kill farmers, there was historical context to such slogans during the struggle against apartheid.
Mbeki made these remarks during a dialogue event at Unisa’s Thabo Mbeki School of Public and International Affairs.

Malema had chanted the slogan at the EFF’s recent anniversary celebrations, leading to criticism from political parties like the Democratic Alliance and the Freedom Front Plus.
Mbeki acknowledged that such slogans were used for mobilisation during the apartheid struggle and are part of the nation’s history.
“So I am saying I listened to Julius saying this and I was saying to myself why does he say it? The slogans have a context, people were shouting slogans in 1952, by 1962 they became irrelevant, but they are a part of our history,” he said.
