Cape Town – First lady Tshepo Motsepe on Wednesday hosted a luncheon during the Brics summit to encourage influential women to support early childhood development in poorer and middle-income countries.
The event was attended by members of early childhood development organisations, representatives from the education department, and the spouses of ambassadors and delegates.
Motsepe emphasised the vital role that women, often the primary caregivers, play in nurturing and developing children.

She urged first ladies to leverage their position to advocate for early childhood development and mobilise resources.
“Given our considerable vantage point and capital as first ladies, we must advocate for early childhood development and mobilise the resources and support that are available to us. We are in the fortunate position that we can work with other people in society to make it possible,” Times Live quoted her as saying.
Motsepe highlighted the economic implications of poor early childhood development, stating that 40% of children in poor and middle-income countries suffer from inadequate development, which affects future economic opportunities.
