Cape Town – The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Bloemfontein had to euthanise a pit bull that was severely beaten by its owner after the dog supposedly grabbed a piece of braai meat.
The incident took place in Thaba Nchu.
The SPCA was alerted by a resident about the abuse, and when their inspector arrived, they found the dog with extensive injuries to its head, including deep wounds.
The dog’s owner showed no remorse, admitting to hitting the dog with a bottle until it broke.
“I felt embarrassed by the dog taking the meat . I just got so mad and hit him with the bottle until it broke,” the owner told the SPCA.
The dog’s living conditions were deplorable, with the animal being kept in unsanitary surroundings, the SPCA said.
“The wounds on the Pitbull correlate with his story however the amount of force that must have been used to break a bottle across a dog’s head is substantial.
“The living conditions of the dog were shocking with the dog being kept in a small back area of 3×3 meters. The entire area was covered in old urine stains and faecal matter.
“The food bowl placed for the Pitbull was in between its own faces. The owner is an individual with little regard for the well-being of his animals and had left the dog with his injuries for multiple days before the SPCA assisted,” the SPCA said.
A case of animal cruelty was reported to the police, and the SPCA aims to secure a criminal conviction and prevent the owner from owning animals in the future.
