Cape Town – The official unemployment rate in South Africa has decreased by 0.3% compared to the previous quarter, now standing at 32.6%.
Statistician-general Risenga Maluleke has released the Quarterly Labour Force Survey data for the period between April 1 and June 30, 2023.
The survey collects information on labour market activities of individuals aged 15 to 64 living in South Africa.

The number of employed individuals in the country is currently 16.3 million, close to the pre-Covid level of 16.4 million.
The unemployment rate among graduates fell by one percentage point to 9.6% in the second quarter.
During the same quarter, the count of individuals without employment decreased by 11,000, reaching 7.9 million. A decade ago, the number of unemployed South Africans was 5 million.
Over the past ten years, the percentage of those experiencing long-term unemployment rose from 66.7% to 77.3%, and female unemployment increased from 27.5% to 35.7%.
