Cape Town – A newborn baby reportedly survived after being wrapped in plastic, with no clothes and abandoned on a sports field in Mpumalanga
According to News24, the baby, a girl with her umbilical cord still attached, was discovered by children playing on the field, who alerted adults on Sunday.
The exact time of abandonment remained unclear, but it appeared to have been shortly after birth.
“We don’t have exact details of when the baby was dumped, but it looked like she was dumped shortly after birth. We are also not sure how long it took her to be assisted/spotted,” the report quoted Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala as saying.
Local community members provided first aid and transported the baby to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
The baby is reportedly in stable condition and being monitored by healthcare professionals.
Police have launched an investigation into the case of concealment of birth and are seeking information to identify and apprehend the mother responsible.
