Cape Town – A veteran detective, Lieutenant-Colonel PN Mathipa, from the Gauteng crimes against the state unit, working for the Hawks, was reportedly fatally shot in what appears to be a targeted attack.
According to EWN, the incident occurred on the N1 road towards Hammanskraal on Sunday night.
The Hawks have confirmed the incident.
According to Times Live, Mathipa was the lead investigator in the abduction of alleged Isis leader Abdella Abadiga from the Mall of Africa in December — allegedly by South African military special forces.
He was shot at, allegedly while driving to collect information.
The incident was initially reported as a single-vehicle accident, but police found Mathipa dead in a rolled white VW Polo with evidence of a bullet wound on the left side of his face, matching a hole in the vehicle.
