Cape Town – A Durban woman riding her mobility scooter on the busiest road in Overport recently left motorists stunned.
In a video clip that has since gone viral on social media, the woman is seen in a lane in her mobility scooter attempting to turn into Sparks Road, surrounded by fast-moving cars.
According to Times Live, she is frequently seen on her scooter in the area.
Durban metro police spokesperson, Senior Superintendent Boysie Zungu, said that only licensed vehicles are permitted on the city’s roads, and mobility scooters are not allowed.
“This should not be used on a public road. Only vehicles that have licence discs are permitted on these roads. Bicycles are permitted on a public road but not this,” the report quoted Zuingu as saying.
Some commentators on social media argued that damaged or non-existent pavements forced the woman to ride her scooter in traffic, while others expressed concerns about the safety hazard posed to motorists who could be held responsible if she was involved in an accident.
