Cape Town – Police in Durban are investigating a business robbery and seven counts of attempted murder after unknown suspects shot seven people on Bertha Mkhize Street on Friday.
The incident involved two suspects robbing a shop while two others guarded the door, reports said.
The suspects stole an undisclosed amount of money and fled the scene, some in a getaway vehicle and others on foot.
“Police have thus far established that two suspects entered a shop while two more suspects guarded the door. Inside the shop, the suspects allegedly robbed the teller of an undisclosed amount of money. Some of the suspects reportedly fled from the scene in a getaway vehicle, whereas others fled on foot,” Berea Mail quoted police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda as saying.
A security officer in the area pursued the suspects on foot, but one suspect shot and injured him.
“One suspect allegedly fired shots at the security guard and injured him. Six more civilians were reported injured when the suspect fired shots randomly,” said Netshiunda.
The same suspect fired randomly, injuring six more people. The injured victims, including two females and five males, were taken to the hospital, the report said.
According to News24, a neighboring shop owner, who preferred not to disclose her identity for safety concerns, said she was in complete shock upon hearing the gunshots.
“It was very scary. I’m not sure what happened, but I was told they tried to rob the nearby cellphone shop. They even took the shop people’s money. But the police were there to sort it out. I hope they get the men who did this,” the report quoted her as saying.
Police have initiated a manhunt for the suspects.
