Cape Town – TV host and musician Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye appeared in court on Thursday on charges of attempted murder, rape, and assault related to incidents between 2006 and 2010.
In his bid to secure bail, he claimed to be the breadwinner of his family and a law-abiding citizen, The Citizen reported.
One of the complainants had previously tried to open a rape case but was allegedly turned away by the police, the report said.
After seeing her speak out about her ordeal on social media, more women came forward with their stories.
Maarohanye denied all charges and stated that he relied on income from his TV hosting job, gigs, and a restaurant he runs to support his family.
“I am the breadwinner of my family. All my immediate family members are residents in SA and we are a very close-knit family which gets along very well,” the report quoted him as saying in an affidavit.

Even though he had a previous conviction, Jub Jub asserted his commitment to abiding by the law and expressed his belief that the current charges against him were deliberately fabricated or manipulated.
“I am a law-abiding citizen and the principles which guide my lifestyle are strictly against the commission of any offences and/or transgression”.
The National Prosecuting Authority did not oppose bail, stating that they did not consider him a flight risk or a danger to the complainants or witnesses.
He was released on R10 000 bail and the case was postponed to 24 August.
TV channel Moja Love, where Maarohanye hosts a reality show, said they would monitor the situation and let the law take its course.
According to News24, the spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, Phindi Mjonondwane, said that charges were filed against Jub Jub for his comments on a podcast in December 2021.
On the show, Jub Jub claimed to have “smashed” Amanda du Pont.

In response to his remarks, Du Pont posted a video on social media accusing Jub Jub of repeatedly raping and attempting to murder her.
She also mentioned that their relationship ended after he cheated on her with singer Kelly Khumalo, who is the mother of his son, the report said.
During the podcast, Jub Jub spoke about his past relationships and confirmed that he was involved with Amanda du Pont. However, he claimed that he did not cheat on her and that their relationship ended due to other reasons, particularly his involvement with Kelly Khumalo.
Du Pont denied being in a relationship with Jub Jub and stated that he forced himself on her after taking her virginity. She revealed that she stayed in the relationship out of fear of him and his mother’s power and even had to abort a child conceived in this situation.
Following Du Pont’s video, radio and TV broadcaster Masechaba Khumalo came forward to support her, alleging that she was also raped by Jub Jub when they were in a relationship during her teens and while she was still a virgin.
Days later, Jub Jub apologised “unreservedly” to Du Pont for his remark in a since-deleted statement on Instagram.
He said: “It was inappropriate for me to discuss the intimate details of my relationship with Ms Du Pont in public. I deeply regret that incident.”
