Durban — Questions arise after a baby dies on his first day at a creche in Zwelisha in Durban as the cause of death remains unknown.
The nine-month old baby, named Siphesihle Msomi died in his sleep at a daycare centre. The family says they need answers as their child was not sick and did not have any health problems, eNCA said.
According to the caregiver, Qapheleni Mavundla, Sipesihle’s father dropped him off at the daycare and told her that he was not feeling well.
“The father of the child dropped him off at 10 in the morning and told me that the mother has asked that he bring him here so that I cna watch over him. He informed me that the baby was not well and that they had taken him to the clinic. I took the baby and saw that he was a but weak and I thought he was hungry and I gave him porridge that I feed to all the children,” Mavundla said.
Mavundla said when she went to wake all the children, Sipesihle was unrespeonsive and they immediately called paramedics.
Paramedics who responded to the call say the baby was found naked and when they assessed him, he showed no signs of life.
“I took the child and placed him on a seat and I assessed the child. My team and I assessed the child fully and he showed no signs of life and he was declared deceased. I noticed the child was naked at the time and when I questioned the caregiver, she said the child had a slight temperature and that’s the reason they removed the child’s clothes,” paramedic Devan Perumal said.
According to police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, an inquest docket has been opened.
“The results of the post-mortem will determine our next play. If there is any foul play detected, that means we have to take the inquest of that particular crime to a judge.”
