Cape Town — Iconic television anchor Derek Watts has made a surprise announcement that he will be retiring after 35 years in the media industry.
Watts announced his retirement in an interview, saying he would not return to the show and his time as a presenter and anchor has come to an end, News24 reported.
“A while back, we did have a discussion about it that this would have been my last year anyway. And the show is in a good place. There are absolutely wonderful people and journalists who ask the difficult questions without shying away,” the report quoted his as saying.

Watts has been struggling with his health and last year, he was diagnosed with skin cancer that had spread to his lungs. He suffered another scare in March when he was diagnosed with sepsis that set his treatment back but he has plans to continue chemotherapy.
He was one of the most iconic names in journalism and established a fine career working as an investigative journalist for Carte Blanche.
“Having been part of Carte Blanche since 1988, Watts is one of the most respected and recognised investigative journalists in South Africa. Throughout his career, Watts has been instrumental in uncovering the truth and ensuring justice,” EWN reported.
He received many congratulations on his stellar career and wishes of strength for his health journey ahead.
