Cape Town – Police have successfully apprehended a suspect believed to be involved in the killing of a police officer within eight hours of the incident.
The suspect, a 33-year-old individual, was captured by a multidisciplinary police team from Limpopo and Gauteng.
The off-duty officer was allegedly shot by unknown assailants driving a bronze Volkswagen Golf 7 GTI in Lebowakgomo on Saturday.
Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya, the National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, activated a 72-hour plan to track down the suspects.
Led by Major General Gopz Govender, the investigative team, which included various law enforcement agencies and private security firms, located the suspected vehicle and conducted a tactical arrest in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.
The suspect’s residence in Centurion, Pretoria, was subsequently searched, resulting in the seizure of a suspected murder weapon, a GTI Golf 7, a substantial amount of money, and a cellphone.
The investigation is ongoing to determine if the suspect is connected to other crimes.
The suspect will face charges including murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and potentially additional charges.
Lieutenant General Lebeya commended the team for their swift action, as the case was resolved within eight hours despite the planned 72-hour operation.
