Cape Town – Two additional arrests have reportedly been made in connection with the recent truck burnings in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo provinces in South Africa.
The arrests were carried out in Mpumalanga and Limpopo, with one of the suspects found in possession of an unlicensed firearm, News24 reported.
With these latest arrests, the total number of individuals in custody rises to five.
“Police are confident that they are closing in on the ring leaders behind these acts of criminality,” the report quoted National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe as saying.
Over 20 trucks have been torched this month in various provinces, prompting increased police visibility and vigilance on major highways.
Police authorities claim to have identified 12 individuals connected to the attacks.
Police Minister Bheki Cele labelled the torchings as acts of criminality and emphasised a “zero-tolerance approach” to prevent further attacks and assured heightened security measures on major routes.
