Cape Town – Police in Bloemfontein have exhumed the body of an 88-year-old woman after she was allegedly buried in a shallow grave within her own yard by her 32-year-old grandson.
The woman resided in Malekunutu Village.
The incident unfolded when community members grew concerned after not seeing the elderly woman for several days.
Worried about her well-being, they promptly reported her as missing to the police on July 12, 2023, police said.
“It’s alleged that on 12 July 2023 the community members became anxious when they did not see the elderly woman from her house for days and approached the police to report her missing. Police together with the community, including Anti-Stock Theft members, began with the search.

“The grandson started running away from the community and police upon realising that they were searching for his granny.
“The team finally caught the young man who was questioned and it was established that he buried the granny’s body inside the yard. It is alleged that the granny was sick and passed on.
“The grandson, therefore without burial money, buried the old woman without informing neither family members nor police even though he collected the granny’s pension money. It is reported that the granny was last seen on 23 June 2023,” police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring said.
The suspect was arrested for defeating the ends of justice and violation of a corpse.
“The post-mortem is yet to be conducted to establish the cause of death,” said Mophiring.
