Cape Town – The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is reportedly investigating a complaint against a shop owner in Gqeberha who allegedly refused entry to LGBTQIA+ individuals.
Shocking photos were recently posted on social media showcasing the exterior of La Gardi, a packaging, spice, dairy, and baking shop.
The photos displayed a chalkboard sign near the entrance that was written: “LGBTQ not welcome at La Gardi – Save our Children.”
According to MambaOnline, the owner of La Gardi, Dawood Lagardien, confirmed that he put up the sign and explained that although gays and lesbians had always existed, they used to keep to themselves, and there was no judgment. However, he believed that LGBTQ individuals were now being imposed upon others.
He expressed concern about the alleged exposure of sexually explicit LGBTQ content to young children in schools. When asked for specific examples, Lagardien claimed that schools were instructing children to ask their fathers about ejaculation.
Asked if he was aware of the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act (Equality Act), which prohibited discrimination in the provision of services in South Africa, Lagardien said he wasn’t concerned about the law.
“I don’t care if you want to sue me or report me,” he said. “I am allowed to put up a sign saying I don’t want LGBTQ people. I will not allow LGBTQ individuals in my shop, and no one can stop me!,” he said.
The SAHRC has since launched the investigation after media reports and public complaints, News24 reported.
The commission is expected to investigate the matter thoroughly and follow its complaints-handling procedure.
“When we noticed this (complaints), we decided to open an investigation, as per our mandating legislature, which then gives us an opportunity to go and see what is happening and to hear all sides of the story.
“I can’t really comment on the content now because we first need to get our facts in order, and then we will be able to determine a way forward in terms of our complaints-handling procedure,” the report quoted the provincial manager of the SAHRC, Eileen Carter as saying.
