Cape Town – The ANC has defended acting Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka in response to criticism she faced for clearing President Cyril Ramaphosa of wrongdoing in the Phala Phala report.
Some political parties accused Gcaleka of disregarding important information regarding Ramaphosa’s alleged involvement in money theft from his farm.
But ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said that the attacks against Gcaleka were unjustified, and those unsatisfied with her findings could review the report.
He condemned the attacks on the Public Protector’s office, considering them as threats to democracy and constitutionalism.
“The ANC reiterates its alarm at the attacks on the integrity of office of the Public Protector, merely because some disagreed with the report by the acting Public Protector. We view such attacks as undermining our democracy and constitutionalism,” Mbalula said on Wednesday as he briefed the media on the outcomes of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) meeting.
