Cape Town – A 33-year-old woman is set to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court in Durban on Thursday after being arrested for perjury.
The woman, employed as a domestic worker on Amand Road in Marriannhill Park, filed a false case of house robbery with the local police. However, investigations by law enforcement officials revealed that her claims were fabricated.
“The woman, who is a domestic worker on Amand Road in Marriannhill Park, opened a case of house robbery and told the police that she was hanging clothes on the washing line when she heard a noise coming from inside the house.
“She further alleged that when she went to investigate, she saw a man carrying a TV set. She also claimed that she saw another suspect breaking the driveway gate and that the man stole jewellery and robbed her of her cellphone before fleeing from the scene in a sliver vehicle,” police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said.
However, CCTV footage obtained from neighbouring houses contradicted the woman’s account.
The footage revealed that she had willingly opened the gate for the two men, thereby indicating her involvement in the supposed robbery.

Subsequently, the woman was arrested and charged with perjury for making false statements to the police.
Law enforcement officials urged community members not to engage in collusion with criminals and later file false reports.
“Resources and time that is spent in investigating fabricated cases could be invested into serving and protecting the residence of the province,” Netshiunda said.
Perjury, the act of knowingly providing false information under oath, is a serious offense that undermines the credibility of the justice system.
